Claudia Pagès Rabal’s practice spans video installation, performance, sculpture, drawing, and writing, driven by a continuous exploration of the intersections among language, law, and territory. Her work examines the complex histories of the Iberian Peninsula and the Mediterranean, tracing how circulation systems such as trade routes, commercial networks, and legal documents carry, conceal, and sustain histories of power, violence, and erasure.

Watermarks: Towers, Castles, Dogs, and Laia emerges from Pagès Rabal’s research into fifteenth-century watermarks preserved at the Capellades Paper Mill Museum, in Catalonia, where the artist grew up. Traditionally embedded within paper and visible when held up to the light, watermarks served as signs of authorship, property, circulation, and control, silently inhabiting official records. Here, the artist reverses their hidden condition, projecting enlarged versions of these marks—dogs, towers, and castles—in a state suspended between visibility and disappearance.

Accompanying the projected images is a recorded exchange with the artist’s two-year-old niece, Laia, whose voice refuses to settle the images into meaning, reaching towards a world not yet fully named.
